Hmm... I just can't agree with this one. I don't remember my reaction to the pilot of Sex Education specifically, but I remember falling for it fast. And, even now, reading the summary... hilarious. I love it. A teenage boy who can't masturbate? Butter. Awkward encounter with his mom? Butter. Hard-ass teenage girl who has to take care of herself (and she's got an alt style)? My most favorite of all butter.
I think it just shows how much people have different taste... and that cultural differences matter. Sex Education is very British. I don't think British people are going to find it odd the way Americans do. But the US isn't one place. It's a lot of smaller places with different POVs and as a suburban girl from California you couldn't pay me to watch Virgin River.
ITA with this! I was *shocked* that Virgin River was the butter-filled show. With VR, I kept checking the timing to see when six minutes were up because I was bored. With SE, it flew past and I watched 7 without even realizing it. Also, the questions kept me coming back. It wasn't that he was setting the scene up for masturbation and didn't get a chance to—it was that he was setting up the scene to make it LOOK like he'd already masturbated and left it there for his mom (the sex therapist) to find and thus, presumably, assume he's "normal" when in actuality, he's never masturbated (whether intentionally or is unable to is another question). And for the first guy...where is his mind? Why is he faking an orgasm with his (presumable) girlfriend?? I don't know...I had a lot more questions after six minutes in SE than I did into VR. But maybe questions aren't the same as butter? Either way, I'll keep watching SE, but I still have no interest in VR.
I love that you outlined all that Virgin River butter without even mentioning THE butter - the Small town grumpy bartender butter aka THE JACK BUTTER. But you're right. It was deliciously done (and very similar to the opening of the first book). We lapped it up during lockdown.
